And at last we want to tell you about, how big the  population of our country is

Latvia is situated in the north of Europe, on the coast of the Baltic Sea. It is situated between Lithuania and Estonia. There are almost 20 countries in Europe, which are smaller than Latvia. Our country is divided into historical 4 parts- Vidzeme, Latgale, Kurzeme and Zemgale. Each part has its national outfit. And you can see it: Latgale Vidzeme Kurzeme Zemgale

Latvia has three big ports, where in winter water doesn’t freeze Riga, Liepaja and Ventspils. Latvia got its independence only in 20 century  In 1918 on 18 of November. And this year it will celebrate its 90th anniversary. Relief of Latvia is even, and highest hill Gaizinkalns is only 312 meters high.

Latvia is popular with its “Singing and Dancing Festival”, which happens once in 4 years. Always, when this festival happens, there are very many people from different sides of the world. It is very interesting and fascinating to meet someone from another country. To this festival go many singers and dancers from different sides of Latvia. They sing national songs and dances. Every song or dance has its special meaning. It is very exciting to see, how many groups of people can make different interesting signs, especially if you look at them from a high place.

Population of Latvia is 2, 3 million citizens. Very big part of Latvian citizens every year go to work and live abroad. We asked some people why do they do it?

Teens (15-16):To get money 44%  Have relatives there 7%  To start a new life 18% Don’t have opportunity to get a good job in Latvia 31%

Teens from (17-20): To get money 56%        Have relatives there 7% To start a new life 11% Don’t have opportunity to get a good job in Latvia 26%

Adults (25-50): To get money           43% Have relatives there 6% To start a new life 15% Don’t have opportunity to get a good job in Latvia 36%

There are different nationalities in Latvia - Latvians (58,6%), Russians (28,8%), Lithuanians (1,4%), Poles (2,5%), Ukrainians (2,6%) and Byelorussians (3,9%). Diversity of these nationalities you can meet in small Latvia’s cities- especially in Latgale. These people are very friendly. That’s why Latvia also is a very friendly country. There are 3 main religions in Latvia- Catholics, Lutherans and Russian Orthodox and Russian Old Believers.

Latvia is one of the amazing countries in Europe. Every summer here are very many tourists - especially in Jurmala, because it is a resort city. Every year here happens a young singer’s competition “New Wave”, where participate different people from different countries. It is fascinating to look at this competition and worry about each participant. All singers sing without recording and we can hear real voice of each singer.

You see, that there are very many cultural monuments, amazing nature and a lot of attractive and old places in Latvia. And not only this. If you are in big Latvian cities-you can have a rest in Spa- centers, massage centers, in beautiful salons. You can enjoy your life in bowling clubs, in super big shopping centers, like “MOLS”, “DOMINA”, “ALFA”, “CITY CENTER”, “DITTON” and others. In three words- ENJOY YOUR LIFE!!! And Latvia is a place, where you can enjoy your life completely. Come to Latvia and we will help you to get enjoyment from our amazing country. We will be waiting for you…

Sincerely,

Anita, Laura

CW 4 Questions:

a)Tell me what type of food you like and what type of food like in your country?

Hello, our names are Jaclyn .M and Emily .L. We took a survey of favorite foods within our class and thought about our personal favorites.

The survey shows us that a lot of our classmates liked pizza, and then in second place was Chinese food (spare ribs, fried rice, fried chicken, chicken balls, and chicken chow mein.) and third place was tacos and macaroni and cheese.

Jaclyn .M’s favorite foods are tacos and Caesar wraps. Tacos are a traditional Mexican meal that consists of a hard shell filled with meat and vegetables. Jaclyn likes to include on her taco: lettuce, cheese, hamburger (with taco spice), and hot sauce.

Her favorite beverages are 7-up/sprite soda and French vanilla cappuccinos.

Emily .L’s favorite foods were pepperoni pizza with lots of cheese and chicken Caesar salad.

Her favorite beverages are green tea (hot or cold) and root beer soda.

b) How biggest is the population in your country?

We live in the country of Canada. It has a population of 33,212,696. In Canada, there are 10 provinces and 3 territories. We live in the province of New Brunswick. New Brunswick has a population of 751,527 people.

c)In your country ,how are the hospitals working?

In Canada our healthcare and hospitals are working extremely well. Here in Canada we actually have a healthcare plan called Medicare. Medicare provides every Canadian citizen with free hospital care; this includes free x-rays, blood work and even vaccines. Canadians also receive discounts on prescriptions drugs and medications. This plan is possible due to tax payers.

An interesting fact about hospitals is that healthcare job are one of the leading employment jobs in Canada.

Answer from CW9

1.) Typical food in Switzerland is ‘Roesti’ that made of potatoes that are cut and fried in onion and butter until you have golden fried potatoes. Another thing is ‘Fondue’. You melt cheese in a pan over a candle or a small oven which you can place on a table. Then you put pieces of bread on long forks and dip the bread into the cheese.

In Switzerland we eat a lot of different sorts of cheese and another meal with cheese is ‘Raclette’. You melt cheese in little pans on a small oven and put it over cooked potatoes.

Every Sunday we bake special bread called ‘Zopf” (English ‘plait’).

What I really like about Switzerland is that there are a lot of chocolate factories and you can buy a whole lot of different, cheap and delicious sorts of chocolate. So it’s common that you do the Fondue with chocolate instead of cheese and then dip fruits into the melted chocolate.

2.) A very typical food in South Africa is ‘Pap’ this is grinded corn that makes meal, this is then cooked with water to form stiff porridge. You often eat Pap with different forms of meat and a tomato and onion mix called “Sheba”.

Stew is often made with meat and a variety of vegetables like, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, pumpkin and beans. The stew can be curried, spicy or even sweet.

A favourite snack is ‘Biltong’; this is made by drying meat using air. This was born out of the need to preserve meat in the olden days when refrigeration was not possible.

A ‘Kota’ is a quarter bread, sliced in half and then filled with French fries, polony and achaar (strongly spiced vegetable pickle sauce). It can aslo be made by filling the bread with curried meat and vegetables ( see picture) This is a favourite lunch meal of the learners at Norkem Park High and is sold at our tuck shop (cafeteria).

b) Population in Switzerland:         7, 59 Million people

Population in South Africa:       47, 85 Million people

c) The hospitals in Switzerland:

There’s quite a good medical system in Switzerland- every person who earns some money pays for an insurance and so you’re saved if you need do go to a doctor or to a hospital.

You normally first go to the doctor and if he/she can’t help you (for example you need to be operated on), he/she tells you to go to the hospital, where you stay until you get better.

We have special clinics for children, with place to play, toys and sometimes there are clowns coming to entertain the children. It’s also possible for parents to stay over night.

The hospital in South Africa:

There are private and public hospitals. Private clinics are more expensive but also much better than the public ones. Many people who earn a salary belong to a Medical Aids Scheme. This is a form of medical insurance that covers the costs of doctor’s visits and medicine. If you have medical aid you go to a private hospital because the medical aid covers the costs. The patient to doctor and patient to nurse ratio is much better and the quality of care is much better.

In public hospitals there’s a lack of nearly everything. Equipment, staff, beds and so you have to wait for a long time to be treated. Obviously emergencies are dealt will first. In the South African system there are also clinics that treat patients free of charge. They provide only basic care and are sometimes the only access that people have to medical care. This is especially true of the rural areas where mobile clinics go to the remote areas to help people that an not get to towns to go to clinics

CW4

A. Holland is famous for its cheese and potatoes. But not everybody likes it, though. There are people who reject cheese, or who get sick when they’re only looking at potatoes. However, most typical Dutch dinners consist of: meat, vegetables and potatoes. But these dishes aren’t the most popular in Holland. A few of the most popular dishes are: French fries, pizza, pancakes and pasta.

Another typical Dutch habit is eating raw herring, which most foreigners consider as “nasty”. Also, we put small “grains” on our bread, which we call: “hagelslag”. Hagelslag occurs in various tastes and colours.

B. Holland has approximately 16 million inhabitants. Most people live in an area called the “Randstad”, which is the commercial centre of Holland. This area includes the three provinces: Utrecht, North-Holland and South-Holland. In this area there are lots of big cities, so lots of offices and multinational companies are situated here.

C. In our country, we have hospitals in nearly every big city. They are divided in special departments. E.g. first aid, intensive care, obstetrics, radiology and physiotherapy. Every department is specialized in a certain thing. When you have an acquaintance or a friend who is in hospital, you are allowed to visit them at certain times which vary per hospital. These times are the so-called visiting hours.

a) Each of us has different attitude toward a meal and different tastes. One love meat and potato, other love vareniks with curd or cherries. But all of us love rolls, patties, pastries.

A main meal of Ukrainians is borscht .

Ukrainian borscht recipe.

Apparently it is practically impossible to describe! There is no a single "correct way" of cooking borscht. Each hostess has her own idea about ingredients and the way borscht has to be cooked. As a result we have as many versions of Ukrainian borscht recipes as many hostesses exist in Ukraine.

What is Ukrainian borscht? On the one hand, borscht is a Ukrainian national soup, but on the other hand it is not a soup at all. There are zillions kinds of soup, but BORSCHT is the only one. What is that special about Ukrainian borscht?

Borscht is not just a regular meal. It is one of the Ukraine's national symbols. It took its name from the word "br'sch" which means beet in old Slavic language. Since the time immemorial there is nothing better than to eat a big bowl of hot borsch when you come from the cold winter street. It will warm up your soul and body, bring much more optimism to your life.

Each region in Ukraine has its own borscht recipe. All the recipes have different names to distinguish them from each other. But there is one thing which they have in common. The real borscht is a home made meal. You can try borscht at some restaurant, but even the best of them can offer you no more than quite decent borscht. It will never have that special home taste and spirit which made Ukraine famous for its borscht.

Ukrainian borscht can be cooked in number of ways. Every hostess can change not only borscht ingredients from time to time, but also the way of cooking every time she cooks borscht. Everything depends on her today mood. Here is just one borscht recipe. It can be a starting point for you if you decided to try to cook your own variant of Ukrainian borscht.

Borscht Recipe. Ingredients.

  • Ukrainian borscht recipe.<br> Ingredients.1.5 - 2 pounds of beef with bone
  • 0.5 cup dry beans
  • 1 medium beet root
  • 0.5 medium cabbage
  • 5 medium potatoes
  • 3 medium carrots
  • 2 medium onions
  • 2 medium parsley roots
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • 2-3 table spoons tomato paste
  • 2 green peppers
  • 5-6 black peppercorns
  • 1 medium garlic
  • 0.25 lb salted salo (pig fat)
  • salt

How to cook Ukrainian borscht.

You will need a 5-6 liter cooking pot. You have to invite all your relatives and friends to try Ukrainian borscht which you cooked yourself. Besides that next day Ukrainian borscht is considered the tastiest one. O.K., let's start. You can follow the borscht recipe exactly or experiment on your own.

1.        Soak dry beans for 2-3 hours.

2.        Cut the meat on pieces (they have to stick out your soup bowl while you eat borscht), place them in a pot filled with the cold water. Bring to a boil, skim off any fat on the surface. In 30 minutes add soaked beans, cover and cook for about 1 hour.

3.        While meat is cooking, chop the beet as thin as you can, put it in a frying pan, add sunflower or vegetable oil, and fry untill soft (don't make it too soft!). You can add 1 tea spoon of vinegar to save beet color.

4.        Chop cabbage (try to make the slices thinner!), peel and chop potatoes. Leave them along for now.

5.        Chop 3 carrots, 2 onions, 2 parsley roots, fry them until the onion is going golden.

6.        Now the fun part of borscht recipe. Let's put all together to make a master piece. Wait, wait! One step at a time. When the meat is ready, add some salt, 2-3 bay leaves, peppercorns, potatoes.

7.        In 5-10 minutes add fried carrots, onions, parsley roots, and beets. Add chopped cabbage. Slow cook about 10 minutes.

8.        Add 2-3 table spoons of tomato paste, wait until it boils. Add a little bit sugar if it is too sour for you. Turn off the stove. No, borscht is not ready yet.

9.        Cut salted salo into the tiny cubes. (Don't worry! You will never see salo in your borscht if you do it proper.) Chop 0.5 head of garlic and the dill. Grind them together in a deep bowl with a wooden spoon. Throw it in cooked borscht. Wait for 10-15 minutes more even if you can't because of all those smells. Enjoy!

2)Ukraine population

  • According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census , population of Ukraine accounted for 48 million 457 thousand persons. 32 million 574 thousand persons, or 67.2% of Ukraine population live in the cities. The rural population is 15 million 883 thousand or 32.8%.
  •

  • 77.8% of population are Ukrainians, 17.3%-Russians, 0.6%-Byelorussians.
  •

  • 85.7% of Ukrainians, 3.9% of Russians and 17.5% of Byelorussians consider Ukrainian language as their native. 95.9% of Russians, 62.5% of Byelorussians and 14.8% of Ukrainians consider Russian language as their native.
  •

  • Ukrainian language is considered the official language of the state. The majority of Ukraine's people are bilingual. They don't need any interpreters to understand each other.
  •

  • Ukrainian culture includes the rich and diverse heritage of more than 110 ethnic groups which live in the country. There are 14 administrative regions (oblast) and an autonomous Crimean Republic in Ukraine.
  •

  • Numerous faiths are practiced in Ukraine. Over 97% of the religious communities registered in Ukraine are Christian. About half of these communities are of the Orthodox tradition. The other half is divided among Catholics and Protestants.

3) It’s pity, but there are almost  no hospitals in Ukraine that provide a level of medical care equal to that found in American hospitals, for example.Health care in Ukraine is supposed to be completely government supported and provided at no cost to residents, but because of the poor economy, hospitals and clinics are run on shoestring budgets. Physicians are seldom paid, equipment is outdated, and medicines and supplies are limited. According to Shellito, patients often must buy their own supplies and medicines and pay the doctors unofficially before receiving care. Because of the high cost, most people with serious illnesses do not get the care they need.
